By many measures - commonsensical or statistical - the United States has not been more divided politically or economically in the last hundred years than it is now. How have we gone from the striking bipartisan cooperation and relative economic equality of the war years and post-war period to the extreme inequality and savage partisan divisions of today? In this sweeping look at American politics from the Depression to the present, Doug McAdam and Karina Kloos argue that party politics alone is not responsible for the mess we find ourselves in. Instead, it was the ongoing interaction of social movements and parties that, over time, pushed Democrats and Republicans toward their ideological margins, undermining the post-war consensus in the process. The Civil Rights struggle and the white backlash it provoked reintroduced the centrifugal force of social movements into American politics, ushering in an especially active and sustained period of movement/party dynamism, culminating in today´s tug of war between the Tea Party and Republican establishment for control of the GOP. In Deeply Divided, McAdam and Kloos depart from established explanations of the conservative turn in the United States and trace the roots of political polarization and economic inequality back to the shifting racial geography of American politics in the 1960s. Angered by Lyndon Johnson´s more aggressive embrace of civil rights reform in 1964, Southern Dixiecrats abandoned the Democrats for the first time in history, setting in motion a sustained regional realignment that would, in time, serve as the electoral foundation for a resurgent and increasingly more conservative Republican Party.PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying reference material will be available in your My Library section along with the audio. 1. Civilization exists by geologic consent, subject to change without notice. The land beneath Yellowstone´s caldera is hot. Huffing and puffing. Moving, stretching, and bulging. Everything has a boiling point. Yellowstone has reached the point of no return. The Yellowstone Series, a new disaster thriller from critically acclaimed author Bobby Akart, takes the listener on a thrill ride as a cataclysmic event of extinction-level proportions ticks away like a time bomb, awaiting its moment. Millions of people visit the Yellowstone National Park every year, blissfully unaware they are on top of the greatest killer man has ever known - the Yellowstone supervolcano.Volcanoes are the Earth´s way of letting off steam. Deep beneath the surface of the planet, excess heat builds up, and it seeks a way to vent. Like an overcrowded bus on a sweltering summer day, the overheated magma stews in its own madness, eventually allowing pent-up frustrations to boil over until it releases its fury - its Inferno - upon the world above.Yellowstone is not an ordinary volcano. It is an extraordinary killer that will show itself in due time. The eruption of the Yellowstone supervolcano will be more than a spectacle to grab our attention. It will be the end of the world as we know it.About the Yellowstone SeriesVolcanoes are the Earth´s way of letting off steam. While most people look at volcanic eruptions as natural disasters, the fact of the matter is without them, the Earth would explode. Deep beneath the surface of the planet, excess heat builds up, finding a way to vent. PRIMER FOR THE SPIRAL POLITIC (POST-WAR EDITION)1: FACTION PARADOX. Era: Non-specific. Technology: Post-linear (subtle), time-active. Even before the outbreak of the ´War in Heaven´, Faction Paradox was regarded as the most unpredictable (and opportunistic) of the time-active powers. Aware of the precarious nature of history - but under no obligation to protect it - while the other Great Houses were still attempting to uphold a ´´universal order”, the Faction was following its own, far more ambiguous, protocols. Ruthless, secretive and at times difficult to understand, it’s hardly surprising that the Faction should have eventually found itself under siege from its rival powers.... Written by Lawrence Miles. This bundle contains the basic information you need to understand the organic process known as mеnораuѕе, considered ´´a nаturаl phase in еvеrу mature woman´s lіfе that marks the end of her fertile, reproductive years, and the start of a new stage in which we no longer need to worry about menstrual cramps, PMS, birth control, and other female inconveniences.” While some women consider it a blessing, others do not because it can affect our physical and mental functions negatively but only if not properly treated.Apart from helping our females listeners improve their lives, the purpose of this book is to expose the ignorance of what we consider the most common menopause myths of all times, believed by many despite the fact of being based on erroneous (and even absurd) beliefs.Myth 1: Menopause is an illness: Certainly not! Menopause is a natural phase in life that affects all women in their 40s and 50s. It is not an illness or disease. Myth 2: Menopause is the end of a woman´s productive life: This is completely false! Actually, a large percentage of the 50 million North American women currently facing menopause and post-menopause are active, productive workers.Myth 3: Menopause means ´´the end is near”: Totally wrong! According to the US Census, average female life expectancy is presently around 80, with many women living in their 80s and 90s. Therefore, when women reach menopause, they often still have several decades of life ahead of them. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Becky Boyd, Berna Vermont. Oscar-winning actor Richard Dreyfuss has spent nearly five decades on the stage and silver screen. However, through his longtime interest in political and social activism, Dreyfuss has emerged as a leading voice in the area of civic engagement and active citizenship, earning posts at St. Antony´s College, the University of Oxford, and the Board of Directors of the Los Angeles ACLU Foundation. Just what are the responsibilities of citizens in a democratic society? Are civic roles in government and everyday life inherent, or do they need to be formally taught? Harriet Tubman was an American abolitionist, humanitarian, and an armed scout and spy for the United States Army during the American Civil War. Born into slavery, Tubman escaped and subsequently made some 13 missions to rescue approximately 70 enslaved families and friends, using the network of antislavery activists and safe houses known as the Underground Railroad. She later helped abolitionist John Brown recruit men for his raid on Harpers Ferry, and in the post-war era was an active participant in the struggle for women´s suffrage. Born a slave in Dorchester County, Maryland, Tubman was beaten and whipped by her various masters as a child. Early in life, she suffered a traumatic head wound when an irate slave owner threw a heavy metal weight intending to hit another slave and hit her instead. The injury caused dizziness, pain, and spells of hypersomnia, which occurred throughout her life. She was a devout Christian and experienced strange visions and vivid dreams, which she ascribed to premonitions from God. In 1849, Tubman escaped to Philadelphia, then immediately returned to Maryland to rescue her family. Slowly, one group at a time, she brought relatives with her out of the state, and eventually guided dozens of other slaves to freedom. Traveling by night and in extreme secrecy, Tubman (or ´´Moses´´, as she was called) ´´never lost a passenger´´. After the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 was passed, she helped guide fugitives farther north into British North America, and helped newly freed slaves find work. 1. Language: English. Primer for the Spiral Politic (Post-war Edition) 5: The Blood Coteries Era: Posthuman historical. Technology: Variable, occasionally time-active. The demise of Earth was followed by a period in which there was, effectively, no such thing as the human species; a period in which humanity suddenly found itself released from its heritage, with genetic manipulation and vast tracts of space separating the survivors from everything they’d once been. Many ´´posthuman” societies inevitably became glorious, grotesque Princedoms, and none more so than those of the Blood Coteries, who - like the Medici and Borgia families of antiquity - commissioned the greatest art and culture of their age even as they conducted unimaginable vendettas and poisoned their potential rivals....
